Day 6 of our Christmas Fragrance countdown heralds a work by one of my favourite perfumers, Andy Tauer. He boasts a wonderful array of fragrances which are far more then perfumes, rather they are works of olfactory art. They are beautifully crafted, and really do fire the imagination. Lonestar Memories (2006) is another fragrance featuring my beloved leather. Yet, there is nothing quite like this, it is one of a kind. Allow me to quote directly from the man himself. "An ode on birchtar: True and unique, rich and lasting The scent of a lonesome rider, wearing old jeans and leather jacket, after a long day on the horse in the dry woods, preparing his coffee on the open, smoky fire." This opens with an invigorating blast of Geranium and Carrot Seed and then Clary Sage which lends a beautiful medicinal aspect. The first time (and every time since) I experienced this opening it made me laugh with delight, I had nothing to compare this to, and my nose was entranced. I was reminded of the smell of my DT lab at school, the smell of wires and plastic moulding that I loved (yes, I was into smells aged 10). I am relieved that others have agreed when smelling this for the first time, it is so vivid. I instantly felt that this fragrance was going to transport me somewhere else for a few hours, to where, I had no idea. This opening lasts for a good hour on my skin, and then begins an exciting transition to its leather and Cistus middle. It is a fascinating phase, because there is a wonderful duel between the unapologetic smoked leather and an emerging sweetness of the amber base. They don't clash, rather they seem to converse. The Cistus adds a herbal and yet balmy harmony to this ever expanding perfume. Rather than fade, it seems to radiate and glow all the more strongly as we reach the longest phase of this masterpiece. The base is a rich and generous dose of Resinous depth, Myrrh and a long and creamy Sandalwood with further judicious sweetness coming from Tonka balanced by Vetiver. It is so well structured, and feels like we have turned up the volume on a base that had been purring away confidently from the start. What can I say about this incredible offering? I love it. It challenges my nose to search, it inspires my imagination, it makes me so grateful to be able to invest time to this passion of mine, it makes me thankful for such bold invention in my own time, it takes me back to a time when I would not have been able to grasp such beauty, but most importantly, it smells incredible.
Try it, and tell me it doesn't blow your mind in some way! Happy Smelling. J xxx
