For the third day of our Christmas fragrance countdown, I thought we ought to move away from the great classics of last Century. As much as I love them, I wouldn't want you to miss out on some of the fun and easy going smells to be had. No Goethe or Melancholic Iris in sight. I have long been a lover of sprouts, and whilst the beloved is also a lover of the the little green delights, I think it's fair to say ( being as delicate as I can on a sophisticated perfume discussion), that she is not a fan of MY love for them. Then again, a free and unintended jacuzzi on boxing day evening is always a delight!! So to the perfume, Brussels Sprouted (2010) by perfumer Brent Leonesio. This is a fun fragrance, and not really about sprouts. Rather we are treated to a curious combo of fresh green leaves in the opening, with a little hint of peppery mint. I also pick up on a little hint of Fennel/Anise, which adds to the fresh and sharp introduction. As this begins to subside, there is a little mossy and slightly sweet middle which opens up the really interesting element to this smell, damp and dirty soil notes with a nicely balanced patchouli. This is where I am transported to a forest floor, full of earthy delights, dank trees, a puddle full of pine and autumn leaves and a little minerality. This combo of fresh and damp is very well done, and makes this fragrance more than the sum of its parts. This is no great tear-inducing Chypre, but it is unique and very enjoyable as an experience in itself. It is also extremely good value, not as cheap as that other sprout related perfume, but who would buy that? Happy Sniffing. J xxx
